On Turning Sixty-Five
“My brother Kenneth had reached “retirement age” and friends and relatives from near and far attended a party honouring him on his birthday. What do you give to someone who has everything he wants? I decided on a fun thing, maybe useful one day. This small poem was attached. ”
The years they come, the years they go;
They keep going by, either fast or slow.
And before you knew it, the day did arrive
That retirement birthday and you’re sixty-five!
The joints don’t bend like they used to do
And a few other things are failing too,
But there’s lots of bounce in the old boy yet
Is he still going strong? – why sure, you bet!
So what should I give you to mark this day?
Something unique to use – or display.
So what shall it be that would make you proud?
What would you need as you walked in a crowd?
Why a cane of course so you would not fall
As you shuffled along – and that is not all.. ..
We attached this cute little bicycle bell
So you can jingle away and people can tell
That you’re coming through so please make way!
For the birthday boy on his special day!
One more little thought to complete my rhyme
Hope you don’t have to use it for a long, long time!
